Resources
The SADA runs an extensive education program, co-ordinated by our Vice President, Warwick Ambrose and run by our Education Officer, Jacqueline Jacobs. Our education program not only introduces new debaters to the activity, but also extends beyond that to develop the skills of senior debaters. The program is monitored and modified every year to meet the changing needs of our schools. Furthermore, our education program never stops. All of our adjudicators, who are university students or professionals, have extensive debating experience and have passed a rigorous accreditation process. Personalised feedback is an integral part of the adjudicator’s role and members of the executive and adjudicators can always be approached for feedback and advice.
All of our education sessions are free for students, teachers and parents of member schools and places are not limited.
New Debaters Evenings / Demonstration Debates
The SADA runs two workshops each year at the beginning of the debating season to help students new to debating. The workshops are also an excellent opportunity for more experienced debaters to brush up on their skills and knowledge of debating. The workshops begin with a short and entertaining demonstration debate put on by experienced university debaters and adjudicators so that students can see first-hand how a debate works. Commentary is provided between speeches to emphasise the key ‘take home points’ from each speaker. After the debate, students are then led through an interactive topic preparation where they learn to construct speeches and prepare a debate.
This year we are holding two workshops:

Coach the Coaches
We realise that many school debating co-ordinators and coaches have not had a great deal of exposure to debating. Accordingly, the SADA’s Education Officer, Jacqueline Jacobs, who co-ordinated a highly successful debating program as an English teacher for over 20 years, is available to visit schools to help co-ordinators at no charge. If you would like to arrange a session with Jacqueline, please email her at education.sada@gmail.com.Point of Information Demonstration DebateTime: 2.00pm - 5.00pm

Points of information are one of the mostenjoyable aspects of debating. They allow debaters to interject in an opposing speaker’s speech which ensures that the debate is dynamic and engaging. The SADA introduces points of information from Intermediate A-Grade. The SADA runs a workshop specifically tailored to teaching students about points of information. The workshop consists of a demonstration debate by senior university debaters and adjudicators which aims at showing students how to handle points of information, followed by a question and answer session. Though the focus of the workshop is points of information, it is still a valuable opportunity for students to watch excellent debaters in action and ask questions about debating more generally.
Senior Debating Workshops
The Senior Debating Workshops are designed for students in Years 10 to 13. The workshops are designed to teach students the skills necessary to debate in the higher-level SADA divisions. These workshops usually take the format of a lecture on a particular aspect of high level debating (eg. case-building, manner, matter, etc) from the state’s best debaters and adjudicators, followed by an opportunity to practice their new-found skills in a secret topic debate and receive specialist, expert feedback.
The debates held during these workshops also form the part of the selection process for the State Team, who compete in the National Championships.
Sunday March 4th, 11th & 18th
Venue: Barbara Hanrahan Building, UniSA City West Campus.
